Teaching Job Cards Like It's My... Job

I'm posting this 12 hours removed from Father's day so here's to hoping your grill flames were high, and your steaks were perfectly medium rare (don't @ me if you like a steak any other way).

As a dad who's juggled more DIY projects than I can count, I’ve realized that job cards are the secret sauce to keeping manufacturing processes as smooth as my Saturday morning pancake batter. Whether you're creating your kid’s latest art project masterpiece or crafting a brand-new BBQ Traeger, job cards are here to save the day!

What Are Job Cards?

Think of job cards as the to-do lists of the manufacturing world. They detail each step of the production process, ensuring everything is on track, from start to finish. In Dynamics 365 F&O, job cards help manage production orders, monitor progress, and ensure that every little detail is accounted for. Let’s break it down with a couple of dad-approved examples.

Example 1: Crafting Your Kid’s Art Project

Imagine your kid comes to you with a vision for their next art project – a paper mache volcano. It’s time to turn that vision into reality. Here’s how you’d use job cards in Dynamics 365 F&O to streamline the process.

  1. Create a Production Order:

    1. Set up a production order for the art project.

    2. Define the materials needed: newspaper, glue, paint, and a balloon.

  2. Job Card Details:

    1. Job Card 1: Prepare Materials

      1. Task: Cut newspaper into strips.

      2. Assigned To: Dad

      3. Time Estimate: 30 minutes

    2. Job Card 2: Assemble Volcano Base

      1. Task: Inflate balloon and layer newspaper strips with glue.

      2. Assigned To: Kid (with dad's supervision)

      3. Time Estimate: 1 hour

    3. Job Card 3: Paint and Decorate

      1. Task: Once dried, paint the volcano and add finishing touches.

      2. Assigned To: Kid aka Mom depending on your kiddo's age

      3. Time Estimate: 2 hours

  3. Monitor Progress:

    1. Use job cards to track each stage of the project.

    2. Ensure tasks are completed on time and adjust if needed.

Example 2: Building a New BBQ Traeger

A Traeger BBQ with smoked meat inside

Now, let’s get serious. It’s BBQ season, and you’ve just bought a new BBQ Traeger online. Here’s how job cards can make this assembly project a breeze.

  1. Create a Production Order:

    1. Set up a production order for the BBQ Traeger assembly.

    2. Define the materials: Traeger components, screws, tools.

  2. Job Card Details:

  3. Job Card 1: Unbox Components

    1. Task: Unbox all Traeger components and organize them.

    2. Assigned To: Dad (with help from the kids)

    3. Time Estimate: 30 minutes

  4. Job Card 2: Assemble the Frame

    1. Task: Connect the legs and base to form the frame.

    2. Assigned To: Dad and Kids

    3. Time Estimate: 1 hour

  5. Job Card 3: Attach Main Body and Grill

    1. Task: Secure the main body onto the frame and install the grill grates.

    2. Assigned To: Dad (with kids handing tools)

    3. Time Estimate: 1 hour

  6. Job Card 4: Final Assembly and Testing

    1. Task: Attach additional components like the temperature gauge, hopper, and any accessories. Test to ensure everything is functioning correctly.

    2. Assigned To: Dad and Kids

    3. Time Estimate: 1 hour

  7. Job Card 5: Drink a Beer and Bask in the Gloriousness of Your New Traeger.

    1. Time Estimate: The rest of the evening. Try reverse searing a steak. Highly recommend.

  8. Monitor Progress:

    1. Use job cards to track each phase of the project.

    2. Adjust timelines as needed and celebrate each completed step.

What About Route Cards?

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Job cards are great, but what about route cards?" Excellent question! Stay tuned for a future blog post where we’ll go into the world of route cards and how they can take your manufacturing game to the next level.

Benefits of Job Cards in Dynamics 365 F&O
